William R. Hollingsworth Jr. (American/ Mississippi 1910-1944) "Frosty Morning" watercolor on paper monogrammed lower right titled and inscribed en verso 22 1/2 in. x 29 3/4 in. matted and framed. Provenance: Descended in the family of noted Mississippi art collector Bitsy Irby. Note: A native of Jackson MS William Hollingsworth returned home in 1934 after six years of art studies. Hollingsworth is known for his watercolors of the countryside near Jackson of which "Frosty Morning" is a prime example. Two African American figures walk down a road running at a diagonal across the composition leading to several sharecropper cabins in the distance. In 1937 Hollingsworth earned national attention when a study of black culture won him the William Tuthill Prize at an international watercolor show at the Art Institute of Chicago. Unfortunately his artistic output was limited to a mere ten years as the artist took his life in the summer of 1944. His work is quite rare especially highly accomplished compositions such as "Frosty Morning".

Arthur B. Frost was born in Philadelphia in 1851, but spent his most prolific years in New Jersey. Considered one of the great illustrators of the Golden Age of American Illustration, he illustrated more than ninety books and produced thousands of illustrations for “Harper’s Weekly,” “Scribner’s,” and “Life” magazines. Frost’s illustrative work chronicles the mood and details of the daily life of farmers, hunters, and fishermen, as well as barnyards and pastoral motifs. By 1876, he was on Harper’s staff working on many books, including “Tom Sawyer,” “Uncle Remus,” and “Mr. Dooley.” He also illustrated Theodore Roosevelt’s sporting book, "Hunting Trips of a Ranchman." Frost was an ardent sportsman who spent his summers and autumns fishing, rowing, and hunting ducks and snipe. He completed hundreds of watercolors and oils of the New Jersey seaside. Frost is best known for his hunting and shooting prints which capture the drama of sport in realistic, detailed settings. Frost lived at his estate, Moneysunk, in Convent Station, New Jersey.
A.B. Frost created this drawing as an illustration for the story "Wamble: His Day Out," which appeared in "Collier's Weekly" in 1917.

(2000), The Incomplete Circle: Eric Atkinson, art and education, Scolar Press, London, p.44.Terry Frost arrived in Cornwall in 1946, staying in a caravan at Cabris Bay and then a house on Quay Street, St. Ives, before returning to London and the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in 1947. He re-visited Cornwall over the next few summers before settling in St Ives in 1950. Barbara Hepworth gave him a job as her assistant at this point, alongside fellow artists Denis Mitchell and John Wells, offering him a steady income and structured working week. It was around this period that Frost began his series of paintings of the quayside. David Lewis, art historian and Barns-Graham’s husband, commented:These “paintings were definitely beginnings for Frost. Boat shapes, masts, riggings, water, sky, rippling, all became free compositional elements of mass, lie, colour, texture and movement rocking to and fro ... because the boats are never still, never static, and so you’ve got this terrific sort of up and down motion, this leaning over that.” When Ben Nicholson first saw works from this series, he exclaimed ‘you’ve got on to something that can last you for the rest of your life’ and it remains true that these shapes were to recur in Frost’s work throughout his career, even as his choice of colour grew bolder and compositions more abstract.Grey, Black and White feels completely abstract at first glance but with further consideration, the overlapping elements emerge to reveal a quayside scene. Frost remains preoccupied with form and texture, restricting his colour palette to focus on depth and volume. The resulting composition is quintessentially mid-century and St. Ives, as well as a microcosm of Frost’s wider artistic considerations of the period.
